The film is a visually modern, very puritanical rendition of the classical texts of Sophocles about power and spirituality, about traditions and the heartless new world. It concentrates on the complex psychology of the ancient text and its connections to our contemporary life.
A film about three friends (a film director, a famous showman and a writer) who didn’t talk to eachother for a while. But now, for the sake of the movie, they sit down together and start to talk about the things which separeted them.
The filming and the editing of the play (directed by Gabor M. Koltai). Philoctetes, as the legend says, was the sword-bearer of Achilles, and he was the one and only of his followers, who dare to light the stakes under the suffering hero. For this action he has awarded the bow of his master. On his way to the Trojan War he was bitten by a venomous sea snake, and after the attack, his wound started to be malodorous. It's smell was so unbearable, that Odysseus ordered his man to leave him on one of the small and deserted islands of the sea. Later, when the war elongated more than the greeks has thougt, a prophecy has risen, which said that only Philoctetes and his bow can end the sensless killing. Thus Odysseus and the son of Achilles, Neoptolemos started to search the sea after the affronted warrior, and tried to persuade him to join to their army again. The performance, besides the antique text of Sophocles, uses such modern adaptations of the play and myth like Heiner Müller's, or John Jesurun's.
Videoclip of the song Hotplay by AWS. The clip is about an eternal circuit: the members of the band try to end the bleak weekdays, which keep them as prisoners. They try to avoid those situations which miss the freedom... Vainly.
30 years - the blues - and ourselves! In 1981, thirty years ago, György Szomjas directed "The Balddog", which became a cult movie. The film tells the story of a rock band which starts to write songs about it's own suburban surroundings. The lowlifes identify themselves with the music of the band and in the finale of the movie we see the band celebrated by thousands of their fans. The protagonists of the movie, Hobo, Bill Deák and Egon Póka still on the stage since then, which is a big deal after 30 years! In February 2011, Hobo Blues Band will hold their last gig in Budapest. This was the band, which was defiend by these great musicians, who were also the key men of "The Balddog". Their songs (and the songs of the movie also) became folklore. The audience knows the lyrics and sing along with the artists. Really interesting that, the half of the public (beside the teenagers who jumping int he first row) come from the 30-40-50 age groups, who live together with these songs for decades. The new folklore of the suburbs became real!
With this recycled feature, Pálfi has composed an accomplished ode to the actors and actresses who have marked and continue to mark the history of cinema, through a tale of man meets woman with a thousand (famous) faces. He has created a very beautiful and funny homage to the art of filmmaking
The main theme of the movie is the story of a man who becomes blind as an adult and to show the blindness caused crisis through his emotional changes and also the woman's who is next to him. To reveal these, beside the film language, we also use the language of contemporary dance and motion - from these two we try to create a unique whole. The first sequences show an almost idyllic state: we see the man and woman, when they are heading to the fitting room. During their way, we see their loving emotions to each other in visual expressions. In the fitting room they dance a fast, characteristic contemporary choreography, which ends abruptly. The next scenes happen in a dark and cold space, where is only a small, exact circle of light. In this circle sits the man alone. This the beginning of the five phase of 'crisis of loosed sight', which we will see in the rest of the movie until the sad end.
In the middle of the night a dark eyed girl split up with her far away love via the internet in hebrew language. Our protagonist is a sensitive and open hearted person - the film tells her next 48 hours after the split, and the way she feels herself in the decisive moments of her own nation.
The Flaszter Maszter video draws from real life: a mundane toilet-restroom, is transformed by Buppa's influence into a lively house party. From one fixed camera position, we see the large restroom of undeterminable origin. In the foreground, as if through the mirrors by the washbasins we watch the arrival of Buppa and soon after, various nightclub characters who are emblematic figures of Budapest nightlife (e.g. the 1000% artist group, bicycle messengers, subculture actors...etc.). as well as numerous party people. As the evening - and the song - progresses, the characters and scenes get more and more surreal, the restroom gets more and more packed and the mood gets higher and higher. Throughout the clip we follow the activity of boys and girls interacting with our star in front of a mirror.
“The Coroners' music is basic and elemental and filled with obsessive, galvanizing passion.” The New York Times
The one and only Central European music group, which has made an international career, the favourite band of Iggy Pop and Henry Rollins: The Galloping Coroners (Die Rasenden Leichenbeschauer, Vágtázó Halottkémek). We made a documentary about their music and life, since the beginnings, from 1975. The scandalous and "banned for more than 11 years" band is not only the prominent of those Central European bands, which revolted against the communist system, but also a theatre, which gained the attention of the audience with it's unique body-art performances. Through the story of the favourite underground band of the Hungarian and international media, we can see the aesthetic preferences of the late Central European socialist system and the altering system, which followed it.
The architecture of Yemen is a unique phenomenon in the history of art. It's dreamy clay buildings unvariably keep the country's architecture's ancient and extraordinary style for centuries. The capital's, Saana's, architecture, or many other cities' in Yemen are only comparable with the edificies on the paintings of Hieronymus Bosch, or the strange clay buildups of Timbuktu. Our documentary introduce in a series of lyrical etudes one of our civilization's incomporable values. Most of the pictures were shot in the medina of Saana, in this arab city, which has a proper spirit, what is bustling, peaceful, busy, calm and contemplative.
We get to know Mátyás, the nice city guy and his world from the film. Mátyás is the anguished, timid type – like so many other people. He doesn’t like to look into people’s eyes, therefore, he walks with his head hanging down. His habit of looking downwards, coming from his timidness, opens another world for him. His world is that of pavements, linings and shoes. Dogs, cats and beech-martens are especially important for him as the creatures coming into the view of a person looking downwards. So in this world, all kinds of beauty can be discovered, just like in the world of ordinary men, which takes place at the average eye level, horizontally, primordially focusing on human face.
A young, 19-year-old boy decides to make a documentary about the first punk band of the Warsaw Pact: the "SPIONS", which formed in the late '70-s in Hungary, and after three flagrant concerts, the members of the band (Gergely Molnár, Peter Ogi, László Najmányi) migrated from the country. First they went to Paris where they disbanded, and later to Canada and the USA. The band's heart, the singer Molnár, still lives in Canada, he does not speak Hungarian, he changed his name, and started a new life program. He is still a "spion", just like László Najmányi. Without money, with a camera, which he borrowed from his director friend, the 19-year-old boy starts to shoot. He gets a lot of answers - but he still has a lot of questions.
The true story is about the nightmarish life of a young woman, who by the time she turns 18, has already a history of substance abuse, and is a prostitute on the streets of Budapest. She is 25, when - for a felony -, gets arrested and during the investigation falls for a policeman, Tamás. The relationship comes from nowhere and turns into what they’ve missed all their lives. They become past, present and future for each other. Monika cleans up her act, becomes healthy and beautiful again. But, in the sweeping frenzy of happiness, they – being both “losers”, who win only in films – realize, they have two choices left to keep their love intact from the cruelties and hopeless struggles for survival which would tear their relationship apart: they either become rich and establish a “carefree” life, or commit suicide together and thus save their love for eternity.
At one point in JOHN's successful life, everything that so far has made sense gets
questioned. He returns from the first fascinating hill-climbing experience of his life with
his friend VADIM, in the latter’s car. The glorious mountain peaks still glint in his eyes,
every step of the climbing still aches in his muscles, his ears still ring with the silence of
the mountain, when standing next to the car in the middle of the bustling city, staring at
his own hand stretched out for a farewell shake, he realizes that his life has been changed
fundamentally and forever. It dawns on him, that nothing he existed and worked for has
been what he had dreamed of as a child. And he feels with frightening clarity that this
very moment is the pivotal one of his life. So, he withdraws his hand, does not say goodbye
to his friend and slam the door of the car, does not turn around and take that first step
towards what used to be his home, but decides to stay in his friend's car. For good! He
starts living in the car, in the strangest alienation from society and life, but in a freedom
that’s almost indigestible for his friend, and - even more so - for his entire, newly found
surroundings. In his solitude, he soon understands that his choice wasn’t simply a
personal whim, neither was it the result of disillusionment, but a reply to the call of an
irresistible power. Still unsure of himself, yet strengthened by the foresight of the future,
he starts waiting with firm resolution. And keeps waiting. His environment, which had
tended to regard his behavior as madness, doesn’t only accustom itself to his peculiarities
but under the sweeping influence of his personality, it starts changing for the better too.
Finally, having fulfilled his mission, he exits life and enters another realm of existence, in
a most enigmatic way. And just when we started to feel disappointed by the fact that
JOHN's story had only been a dream, or a passing thought of the moment, his story
begins all over again. And this time for real.
